About

The world’s first floating offshore wind turbine stands as a testament to innovation at the METCentre test site, operating under its own concession. Originally installed in 2009 as Hywind Demo by Equinor (formerly Statoil), this 2.3 MW turbine laid the foundation for the global floating wind industry. It was the breakthrough that enabled Hywind Scotland, the world’s first commercial floating wind farm, and Hywind Tampen, which now supplies renewable power to the Gullfaks and Snorre oil and gas platforms.

In 2019, Unitech Offshore acquired the concession and turbine, renaming it Unitech Zefyros. Today, it remains a critical asset in the advancement of floating wind technology, supplying power to the onshore grid via a 22 kV/15 MW cable while also serving as a cutting-edge test platform for next-generation components and systems.

Setting a new industry milestone, a helicopter deck has been mounted to Unitech Zefyros, for the first time integrated to a floating wind turbine - paving the way for improving logistics, enhance accessibility, and lower operational costs for floating wind projects.
