The Norwegian Marine Energy Test Centre (METCentre) is congratulating Swedish floating wind innovator SeaTwirl on securing more than 15 million euros in Horizon Europe funding for its Verti-Go project.

The Gothenburg-based company will advance its 2MW vertical-axis floating wind turbine through late-stage design, fabrication, installation and operation phases, under the “Demonstrations of innovative floating wind concepts” programme.

This shows that they are playing in the Champions League

A milestone

Work is set to begin October 1, with design completion targeted by the end of 2026, followed by construction and operations running until the end of 2029.

"This is an extraordinary milestone for SeaTwirl, and I am truly excited about working with our partners, some of whom have been pioneers in this industry and have world-leading floating wind experience",  says Johan Sandberg, CEO of SeaTwirl, in an announcement.

An important progress

"Developing and scaling up new and innovative concepts is key to advancing technology and reducing costs in floating offshore wind", says Cecilia Girard-Vika, Director of the METCentre, adding: "Projects like SeaTwirl’s Verti-Go represent important progress in this direction. We congratulate SeaTwirl on reaching this milestone and we look forward to follow the project."

After months of preparations, Sandberg can now kick off the project and begin the exciting journey to install and demonstrate a full-scale SeaTwirl turbine.

"We are very proud of this achievement and what the Verti-Go team has accomplished pulling this together", says Sandberg.

SeaTwirl’s vertical-axis design integrates the tower and spar into one rotating unit, enabling the use of less steel and offering easier access than conventional floating solutions, which can reduce service and maintenance costs over time.

Champions League of floating

“SeaTwirl is receiving support from Horizon Europe’s highly competitive call for new floating technologies. This shows that they are playing in the Champions League”, says EU advisor Tor Arne Johnsen. ”The funding is a grant that will enable a full-scale demonstration of the turbine, followed by commercialization and scaling.”
